Budgeting
You can label accounts with tags and use those labels to total, filter and find them.
Tags are the grouping the budget's structure does not give you. Categories and groups impose one hierarchy; a tag cuts across it.
Open **Tags** from the settings. Add a tag and name it. The list is flat, with the usual visibility toggle and in-use count.
Select an account and open the **Tags** panel in the account details. An account can carry several.
This is the part that makes tags worth the effort. A tag is not a note to yourself — it is an input to three other things:
**Totalling.** `SUM_TAG("VFX")` returns the total of every account carrying the tag, wherever it sits. That is a VFX figure spanning camera, post and crew, which no category subtotal can give you — see [aggregate by company, tag or effect](/kb/article/aggregate-by-company-tag-or-effect).
**[Filtering](/kb/article/filter-a-budget).** Show only the tagged rows and work on that slice.
**Reporting.** A tag total can drive a markup or feed a figure someone outside needs.
A tag earns its place if you can name the question it answers — *what is the VFX spend*, *what is weather-dependent*, *what is subject to the reduced rate*. Tags applied "for tidiness" cost effort and return nothing.
**Renaming and deleting.** A tag referenced in a formula cannot be deleted, and renaming one breaks the formulas that name it — the delete guard exists for exactly that. Check the in-use count first.
