Budgeting
You can create the production's phases on the timeline, give each one its dates and work days, and change or delete it.
A work phase is a stretch of the production with a start and an end, for example *Prep*, *Shooting* or *Wrap*. Each phase has total days (TD) and work days (WD), which formulas in the accounts can use. KOSMA calculates TD from the start and the end. You enter WD yourself.
If you can only read the budget, a double-click in the timeline creates no phase, and **Ok** in the **Timeline** dialog is greyed out. This is the case with a Free licence or an expired trial, in a budget shared with you for reading only or linked to a cost control set, and when you work signed out. In the left panel, click  **Timeline**. KOSMA opens the **Timeline** dialog with the lanes **Milestones** and **Work Phases**.
Choose the scale with **Days**, **Weeks** or **Months**. Click **Today** to centre the timeline on today's date. To move the timeline, click  or , or drag the empty background.
In the **Work Phases** lane, double-click the day the phase starts. KOSMA creates a phase of 7 days with 5 work days and opens **New Work Phase**.
Fill in the fields and click **Ok**. KOSMA shows the name and both counts on the phase's bar, for example `TD: 63 | WD: 44` for *Prep* in the demo project.
- **Name**: KOSMA uses the name in the phase's variables, for example `Shooting_workdays` and `Shooting_duration` for *Shooting*. If you rename the phase later, KOSMA changes every formula that uses these variables. - **Start Date** and **End Date**: when the phase starts and ends. If First Shooting Day has no date, the dialog shows **Start** and **End** instead, in days before or after First Shooting Day, for example `-7` or `+0`. - **Total Days (TD)**: KOSMA calculates this number from the start and the end. You cannot type in the field. - **Work Days (WD)**: the number of days worked in the phase, as a whole number of 0 or more. KOSMA does not deduct weekends or breaks. If you type more work days than the phase has total days, KOSMA moves the end of the phase so that TD matches. - **Select color**: click a swatch, or click  to pick a colour of your own. KOSMA saves a colour of your own as the nearest of the 12 swatches.
Double-click the phase's bar to open **Edit Work Phase** with the same fields. To move the phase, drag the middle of its bar. To change its start or its end, drag the left or the right edge. When TD or WD changes, KOSMA recalculates every formula that uses the phase. See [use phase durations in formulas](/kb/article/use-phase-durations-in-formulas).
When the length changes, KOSMA keeps **Work Days (WD)** as it was, and you adjust it yourself. If the phase then has fewer total days than work days, KOSMA lowers WD to TD and shows this message:
The number of total days has changed. Make sure you adapt the work days number as well.
You cannot delete a phase that a formula, an account or a cash flow rule uses. See [why some things can't be deleted](/kb/article/why-some-things-cant-be-deleted). To delete any other phase, click  in **Edit Work Phase**, or select its bar and press Delete. KOSMA asks:
Are you sure you want to delete this work phase?
Click **Delete**.
Click **Ok** in the **Timeline** dialog. KOSMA saves every change you made in the timeline. If you click **Cancel** or close the dialog instead, KOSMA discards all of them, including the phases you confirmed with **Ok** in **New Work Phase** or **Edit Work Phase**.
