Budgeting
You know when KOSMA saves a budget, what Discard removes and why you cannot edit a budget you opened yourself.
KOSMA saves every change to the server automatically. **Discard** takes every budget, plan and cost control set of the project back to the last save. If you cannot edit a budget, KOSMA shows you the reason and what you can do.
KOSMA saves about one second after each edit. After a save, you can still undo your edits one by one. For dialogs, saving by hand, offline work and closing a project, see [how your work is saved and synced](/kb/article/how-your-work-is-saved-and-synced).
**Discard** takes every budget, plan and cost control set of the project back to the last save, without asking first. You cannot undo it, because KOSMA also clears their undo history.
Choose **Discard** in the **Project** menu. In the browser, click **Discard** instead. Because KOSMA saves after about one second, **Discard** usually removes only the edits of the last second. To take back older edits, undo them one by one. For the same reason, **Discard** does not bring back what **Clear Budget Data** or **Renumber Budget Items** changed. If you cannot edit a budget, KOSMA greys out the controls that change it. Point at one of them to see the reason. If you try to edit anyway, KOSMA shows the reason as a message. In the left rail, the open budget carries a symbol. For three reasons, the message has a button. The button and the symbol both open a dialog for that reason:
- Linked to a Cost Control set: **Unlock for Correction** and the padlock . - Locked with **Lock**: **Unlock** and the padlock. - Licence does not allow editing: **Upgrade** and the symbol .

A budget that is linked to a Cost Control set is locked. KOSMA shows:
This budget is locked because it is linked to a Cost Control set. To make changes, create a copy.
Click **Unlock for Correction** in the message, or the padlock  in the left rail. KOSMA opens **Locked Budget**, with two options. **Unlock for Correction** lets you edit the budget itself, and the cost control set picks up the new figures. **Copy** creates the copy the message suggests. With the **Free** licence, you cannot edit a budget, not even in a project you created. Only the Demo Project stays editable. When a trial ends, your licence becomes **Free**. In this message, KOSMA calls the budget a "dataset":
This dataset is locked because your Free licence does not allow editing it. Upgrade your licence — or ask your team admin, if your licence comes from a team.
A paid licence lets you edit only the modules it covers. In a module your licence does not cover, such as Cost Control on a **Budget** licence, KOSMA shows:
You don't have editing access to this module with your licence. Upgrade your licence — or ask your team admin, if your licence comes from a team.
