Budgeting
You know what Save & Sync and Discard each do to a budget, and the two different reasons one can refuse to be edited at all.
Two commands under **Project**, and between them they decide what survives.
**Save & Sync** (⌘S) is what makes your changes permanent. Until you run it your work is held in the open window only — and the same command uploads it, so there is no separate sync step to remember.
**Discard** throws away **everything since the last save**. That is worth stating plainly, because the word appears on dialog buttons where it could be read as "cancel this dialog": it is not. It cannot be undone afterwards, because the undo history goes with it.
Everything else about the model — why a save is a save *and* a push, what the Server column is telling you, what happens offline, and the difference between the close-a-project and quit prompts — is set out once in [how your work is saved and synced](/kb/article/how-your-work-is-saved-and-synced).
If nothing will accept an edit, it is one of these, and they have different remedies.
A budget that has been connected to a Cost Control set is **locked**: cost control compares actuals against that budget, so letting the budget move underneath would invalidate the comparison. KOSMA tells you which set it is linked to and offers to **make a copy** — the copy is unlocked and yours to edit, while the original stays as the fixed reference cost control needs.
On the free KOSMA licence you have **viewing rights only**. You can open a dataset, read it and navigate it, but not change it. Upgrading the licence restores editing.
The distinction is worth checking before you go looking for a stuck dialog: a locked budget is about *this* budget's role in the project, while a view-only licence applies to everything you open.
