Budgeting
You can save a budget as a template and find the template again when you create a new budget.
With a template, your next production of the same kind starts from a proven structure. When your productions use the same [account numbers](/kb/article/number-accounts-and-groups), you can compare them directly. You need a budget open in Budgeting and any licence except a Free licence. You can also save a budget linked to a cost control set as a template, even though you cannot edit it.
Copy the budget you want to turn into a template, and open the copy. This way, your production's budget stays as it is. For the ways to copy a budget, see [duplicate a budget for comparison](/kb/article/duplicate-a-budget-for-comparison).
When you click **Save** in **Save as Template**, KOSMA first saves every change in the open budget. If you delete the figures in your production's own budget and then save it as a template, KOSMA also saves that budget without its figures. **Discard** does not restore them.
In the copy, delete the quantities, the prices and every figure that belongs to this production alone. Keep what every project of this kind needs: the categories, the groups and the accounts. KOSMA puts the whole open budget into the template, with every account, figure, fringe, tax, variable and setting. It removes nothing on its own. If the template still holds the last production's figures, every budget you create from it starts with those figures.
In the **Project** menu, choose **Save As Template** ▸ **To Custom Templates**. KOSMA opens **Save as Template**.
The field shows a suggested name, such as New Template 1. Type a name of your own and click **Save**. KOSMA does not ask for a category. It also does not check whether another template already has the same name, so choose a name by which you recognise the template in the list.
KOSMA saves the template on this computer and then uploads it to the server. If the upload fails, KOSMA shows:
The budget template was saved on this device but could not be uploaded. It will retry syncing.
To save the template as a file instead, choose **Save As Template** ▸ **To External File**. KOSMA writes a `.kost` file. You open it with **Load File** in **New Budget**.
Open **New Budget** as described in [create a budget from a template](/kb/article/create-a-budget-from-a-template), and choose **Custom Budgets** under **Category**. Your template is in the list, which shows the newest template first. It does not appear in the **Budgets Manager** or in the budget dropdown.
In this list, you can rename the template and change its **Info** and **Language**.
KOSMA deletes a template at once, without asking and for good, on this computer and on the server. You cannot undo this.
You can also delete the template in this list. A budget you create from the template is not linked to it. When you change the template later, that budget stays as it is. Changes to that budget do not change the template either.
**If Save As Template is greyed out.** Either you have a Free licence, or the open budget is shared with you read-only. An expired trial counts as a Free licence. With a Free licence, you need a paid licence. See [upgrade your licence](/kb/article/upgrade-your-licence). For a budget shared with you read-only, ask its owner to share it with you for editing.
