Financing
You can move a plan onto a different budget by copying it there, and you know what the copy warns you it cannot bring.
Budgets get superseded. A plan built against version 3 needs to be read against version 4, and the work in it is worth keeping.
**A plan in place cannot be re-pointed** — there is no control that changes an existing plan's link. What you do instead is **copy it onto the other budget**, which is a supported, warned-about operation rather than a workaround.
From the plan dropdown, on the plan you want to move.
In *Link budget and settings values to:*, choose the target — another budget, or a cost control set. This is the whole difference between a relink and an ordinary copy.
If the target budget has everything the plan refers to, the copy just runs.
If it does not, you get **Some Details Cannot Come Across** — *The selected budget does not have everything this plan refers to. Continuing will clear:* — followed by only the categories this particular copy affects, each with a count:
- amount references to budget accounts the selected budget does not have - company assignments - effect assignments - tax assignments - milestone-based cash-flow rules
**The warning comes before anything is written,** and it lists only real losses. No warning means nothing is lost.
Cancelling is often the better move. If the alert says you will lose eleven company assignments, adding those companies to the target budget first — with the same names — means the next attempt loses nothing.
Everything is re-resolved **by name** in the target: companies, effects, taxes, milestones, phases and payment cycle presets by their name, currencies by their code.
That is what makes preparation work — and what makes renaming dangerous. A company called *Firma A* in one budget and *Firma A GmbH* in the other is two different companies as far as the copy is concerned, and the assignment is cleared.
| Referent | In the target | | ------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ | | currency | matched by code; falls back to the default currency | | company, effect, tax | matched by name; cleared if absent | | milestone, phase, payment cycle | matched by name; the rule is cleared if absent | | tags | matched by name; the tag is dropped if absent | | amount formulas | copied as text — a reference the target lacks resolves blank |
The last row is the one to check afterwards. A formula is not rewritten, so `ACCOUNT(...)` pointing at an account the new budget does not have leaves a blank Total rather than an error. Scan the Total column for empty cells once the copy lands — see [reference the budget in a source amount](/kb/article/reference-the-budget-in-a-source-amount).
The old plan still exists, still linked to the old budget. Keep it until the copy checks out — then delete it, or keep it deliberately as the record of that round.
