Cost Control
You know what the six figures of the grand totals add up, where you see the figures of one category and why Budget can differ from the grand total in Budgeting.
In Cost Control, the left rail shows **Grand Totals in {currency}**: six figures for the whole cost control set. They show whether the production is over budget. Above them, **Categories** lists the categories of the budget.
The block shows **Budget**, **Forecast** and **Variance**, then, below a line, **Paid**, **Expected** and **Free**. Each figure is the total of all accounts and markups of the set. **Variance** is **Budget** minus **Forecast**, and **Free** is **Forecast** minus **Paid** minus **Expected**. KOSMA shows a negative **Variance** or **Free** in red. For what each figure means, see [read the six money columns](/kb/article/read-the-six-money-columns).
Look at **Variance** first. A negative **Variance** means that the forecast is higher than the budget: the production is over budget. To find out where a negative variance comes from, see [understand a negative variance](/kb/article/understand-a-negative-variance).
KOSMA shows the figures in the display currency you pick in the toolbar, converted at the exchange rates of the set. The heading of the block names this currency. To change it, see [switch the display currency](/kb/article/switch-the-display-currency).
The block always shows the totals of the whole set, even while you filter the grid by a category. **Categories** shows only the names. To see the figures of a category, click it in **Categories**. KOSMA filters the grid to that category, and the bottom row of the grid, **Totals in {currency}**, shows the six totals of that category. Each group row of the grid shows the totals of its group. KOSMA takes **Budget** from the linked budget, account by account, each time it shows the set. On a new set, **Budget** therefore matches **Grand Total in {code}** in Budgeting, and a correction to the budget also appears here. The two figures differ in these cases:
- You created the set without ticking **List fringes, supplements and extra costs as cost items**. The set then has no accounts that collect fringes, supplements and extra costs. - You deleted an account from the set. - You added accounts to the budget after you created the set. - Budgeting and Cost Control show different display currencies, or you changed the exchange rates of the set.

The open budget has no cost control set yet. To create one, see [create a cost control set](/kb/article/create-a-cost-control-set). A new set shows figures from the start, with 0.00 in **Variance**.
You can read the grand totals with every licence, even offline and while signed out. With a Free licence or as a guest, you see them in a set that someone shared with you.
