First Steps
You know how KOSMA updates itself and how to check whether your version is up to date.
KOSMA checks for updates on its own, downloads them and restarts to install them.
In the **Help** menu, click **Check for Updates**. You can do this in the sign-in window too, before you sign in.
KOSMA shows every update message at the bottom right of the [Project Manager window](/kb/article/the-project-manager-window).
If you already have the latest version and checked from the menu, KOSMA shows this message:
**Message:** KOSMA {version} is up to date.
If an update is available, KOSMA shows this message on macOS shortly before the download starts:
**Message:** KOSMA {version} is available and will be installed automatically.
When the download is complete, KOSMA shows this message on macOS and Windows:
**Message:** KOSMA {version} is ready — the application will restart in a few seconds to apply the update.
Five seconds after the restart message, KOSMA restarts.
If a project has unsaved changes, KOSMA stops the restart and shows the **Unsaved changes** dialog.
With **Discard All**, the unsaved changes of every listed project are lost.

After **Cancel**, KOSMA offers the update again at the next hourly check, or earlier when you start KOSMA again.
The check fails, for example, when there is no internet connection. KOSMA then shows an error message. On macOS, it reads:
**Message:** Update failed: {error}
On Windows, it reads:
**Message:** The update check could not be completed. Please try again later.
KOSMA shows the same message when it checks for updates on its own. Check your internet connection and click **Check for Updates** again.
