Cash Flow
You can create a plan, and you know the two things that must exist before you can.
The app states the chain itself: *A cash flow plan can only be created if a budget and a financing plan exist.* The alert offers a **Create Financing Plan** button when that is what is missing.
The order is not arbitrary — a cash flow plan reads expenses from one and income from the other, so with either absent there is nothing to project — see [what a cash flow plan reads](/kb/article/what-a-cash-flow-plan-reads).
Open cash flow in a project with no plan and you do not get an empty grid — the module prompts you to create one. There is deliberately no empty frame to misread as a broken plan.
Give it a name that says which scenario it is — *Cash flow v2*, *Cash flow with bank facility*. Productions usually keep several.
The **Expenses source** picker takes a budget, or a cost control set once one exists. Budget projects the plan; a cost control set projects what is now expected — see [plan against a cost control set](/kb/article/plan-against-a-cost-control-set).
**Income source** takes a financing plan. If a project carries several — different financing rounds — this is where the scenario is chosen.
The plan opens. Two things usually want doing straight away:
- **Set the window** — start and end dates, without which there are no balance rows — see [set the plan window](/kb/article/set-the-plan-window). - **Read the warnings** in the rail. A plan built on a budget whose accounts lack cash-flow rules will be substantially empty, and the warnings say by how much — see [why something is missing from the plan](/kb/article/why-something-is-missing-from-the-plan).
**Both sources can be changed later.** Unlike a financing plan's budget link, the pickers stay live in the rail. Repointing a plan at another budget or another financing round is a normal thing to do — which is what makes cash flow the right place to compare scenarios — see [choose what the plan reads](/kb/article/choose-what-the-plan-reads).
