Cost Control
You can copy a set to preserve a reporting period before you carry on booking into the next one.
A set is a running record, and running records get overwritten. Copying is how you keep a period's closing position before the next period's bookings change it.
From the set dropdown, or the copy action in the Cost Control Sets manager.
The field starts as *Cost Control Name (copy)*. Replace it with the period it preserves — *Cost Control as at 31 March* is worth more in six months than *Cost Control (copy)*.
The copy is a set in its own right, on the same budget, with the same accounts, cost items and forecasts.
The import dialog offers to make this copy for you, and recommends it: *Do you want to create a copy of the cost control dataset before you import accounting data? (recommended)*.
Take it. An import brings in hundreds of bookings at once and can consolidate forecasts as it goes; a copy made beforehand is the only way back to how the set read before that happened — see [import accounting data](/kb/article/import-accounting-data).
Two sets on the same budget are independent. Booking into one does not touch the other, and both still read the same locked **Budget** column — which is what makes them comparable.
That is the useful property: opening last quarter's copy beside this quarter's set shows how the forecast has moved against an unchanged plan.
