Budgeting
You can show the frozen Original figures of a budget next to its current totals, see which rows have gone over, reset Original when a version is agreed and lock it.
Use **Original** and **Variance** to compare a budget with a frozen state of itself. **Original** shows the figures of each row as KOSMA froze them, usually when the budget was created. **Variance** shows how far the current **Total** has moved from them. With every licence, you can read both columns in a budget open in Budgeting. To reset or lock Original, you need a licence that covers Budgeting and a budget you can edit.
In the grid, click  **Show or hide columns** and tick **Original & Variance** under **Columns**. KOSMA shows **Original** and **Variance** to the right of **Total**, in the **Markups** grid as well.
KOSMA saves the setting in the budget. On a budget you cannot edit, KOSMA saves it only for you, on this computer. For the other columns in this menu, see [choose and arrange grid columns](/kb/article/choose-and-arrange-grid-columns).
The print dialog has its own setting. To print both columns, drag **Original & Variance** from **Add Columns** into **Selected Columns** in the print dialog. For the other print options, see [print a budget](/kb/article/print-a-budget).
Point at **Original** in the column header. KOSMA shows this tooltip:
Shows the original values of this budget when it was created. Refreshing updates them to the current values.
By "refreshing", the tooltip means the reset in step 3. KOSMA freezes Original when the budget is created. For an older budget, KOSMA froze Original the first time the budget was opened after these columns were added to KOSMA. A copy of a budget keeps the Original of the budget you copied. Groups, categories and accounts with subaccounts show the sum of the Original values of their rows.
**Variance** shows the current total minus Original. If the total is above Original, KOSMA shows the variance in red. If it is below, the variance is negative. If the total of a row has not changed, **Variance** stays empty.
KOSMA shows both columns in the reporting currency. If you change the reporting currency or an exchange rate, KOSMA converts Original and the total at the same rate. When everyone involved has agreed on a new version of the budget, make the current totals the new **Original**.
A reset overwrites the old Original, so **Variance** no longer shows how far the budget had moved from it.
To reset every row, click  **Reset all Original values to current Totals** in the **Original** column header. KOSMA sets the Original of every row to its current total, and **Variance** is empty again. To undo the reset, choose **Undo** in the **Edit** menu. Sometimes this takes two steps: if **Original** still shows the new values, choose **Undo** again.
To reset a single row, point at its **Original** cell and click  **Reset Original to current Total**. The icon appears only when the row's total has changed since KOSMA froze its Original. It never appears on an account with subaccounts.
As soon as a version is agreed, click  **Lock Original refresh** in the **Original** column header. KOSMA greys out  **Reset all Original values to current Totals** and hides  **Reset Original to current Total** in every row. The column header now shows  **Unlock Original refresh**.
KOSMA saves the lock in the budget. Anyone who can edit the budget can click  **Unlock Original refresh** to unlock it again.
This means you cannot edit the budget. That is the case with the **Free** licence (also after a trial has ended), on a budget shared with you read-only, on a budget linked to a cost control set, and when you are not signed in. You can still read **Original** and **Variance**. In the rows, KOSMA greys out  **Reset Original to current Total**. In the column header,  **Reset all Original values to current Totals** and  **Lock Original refresh** are not greyed out. If you click them, KOSMA changes nothing and shows one of the following messages.
With the **Free** licence, KOSMA shows:
This dataset is locked because your Free licence does not allow editing it. Upgrade your licence — or ask your team admin, if your licence comes from a team.
On a budget shared with you read-only, KOSMA shows:
This dataset was shared with you and cannot be edited. Ask its owner for editing rights.
On a budget linked to a cost control set, KOSMA shows:
This budget is locked because it is linked to a Cost Control set. To make changes, create a copy.
If you are not signed in, KOSMA shows:
This dataset is read-only because you are not signed in. Log in again to make changes.

**Compare two different budgets.** Original and Variance compare a budget only with its own earlier figures. KOSMA has no view that shows two budgets side by side.
