Budgeting
You can record the reasoning behind a number where the next reader will find it.
Select an account and open the **Notes** panel in the account details. Type; it is free text.
A budget line records **what** a number is, never **why** it is that number. The note is where the why goes:
- The assumption — *assumes two units for six days*. - The source — *per the quote of 14 March*, *2026 tariff*. - The uncertainty — *pending confirmation of the location fee*. - The decision — *reduced from 12 days after the schedule meeting*.
Three months later, the question is never "what does this line say". It is "why is it that much, and can it be less". A budget that cannot answer that gets re-researched from scratch — usually under time pressure, often by someone who was not there.
Notes cost seconds when the reasoning is fresh and save hours when it is not.
A note shows as a dot in the Account Details column, so you can see at a glance which lines carry reasoning and which are bare. Scanning for **untagged assumptions** is a genuine review technique.
A note is the sentence; an [attachment](/kb/article/attach-files-to-accounts) is the document. A quote goes in as a file, and the note says what you took from it.
